This time accompanied by two other keen bird watchers: John Azzopardi and Joe Grech. They confirmed it was a second-year bird.

  • Taiga Flycatcher
11 Aug:  On April 29th I trapped a Ficedula flycatcher at the JBO, Israel. I misidentified it as a Red-breasted Flycatcher, and after being ringed and released it was never seen or heard again. However, after examining images taken by myself and Ron Haran, I re-identified the bird as a 2nd-cal female Taiga Flycatcher Ficedula albicilla. The bird was very worn, and the uppertail coverts weren't jet-black and in direct light looked more blackish with a brownish tone, which made the ID more complicated. All other features including dark and heavy bill, head pattern and underparts pattern fit well with albicilla. I sent the description and images to several leading European and Asian Ornithologists, and finally Lars Svensson confirmed the ID as a Taiga Flycatcher after comparing the images with skins in museums in Copenhagen and Paris, and with images from E Asia showing that in direct light worn birds can indeed show blackish uppertail coverts.
